Job portal for disabled
·
Job portals have become the trend of the day with huge TV commercials promoting its business standing testimony to the fact.
Given the scenario, it is
worth exploring the online job search for people with disability too.
Earlier, attempts had
been made by none other than the Department of Welfare of Disabled and Senior
Citizens in collaboration with Partners in Change (PiC), an NGO , to develop a
website www.karnatakapwdjobs.com to allow persons with disabilities to hunt for
jobs anywhere in India and provide for companies to post their jobs free of
charge.
However, to our
disappointment, the website now remain dysfunctional.
Even, Nasscom (National
Association of Software and Services Companies) of India was working to build a
job portal for aspirants with disability which aimed at catering to the
requirements of the aspiring candidates by putting online database of
applicants, their skills and potential recruiters. However, officials from
Nasscom were unavailable for any comments on the functioning of the website.
On similar lines, Leonard
Cheshire Disability, a NGO for the disabled in India, in an effort to help
millions of disabled in the country, has designed a portal named
www.Jobability.org dedicated to help facilitate recruitment for the differently
abled recently.
The website targets
leading companies in the country to offer jobs by going through the uploaded
resumes of the candidates and by registering vacancies which persons with
disability can apply to.
The website will also
provide information related to the livelihood opportunities.
Aruna Rangachar, National
Director at Cheshire Disability Trust says, “The mainstream companies including
the IT sector had tapped the potential of talented candidate among this group.
So, we decided to create
a platform to bring together the job seekers and the job providers so that
enough opportunities are created.
We have approached
companies like, IBM, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture and others, who already recruit
differently - abled candidates under their inclusive programme.
Our portal will cater to
people with visual, hearing, speech, loco motor and mild-intellectual
disability.
The portal will also serve
as a forum where people with disability can showcase their capabilities,
discuss their issues and take advice.
”The portal is not just
limited to one field of work but to many others.
It caters to various
streams such as journalism, business strategy, management, consulting,
engineering, fashion designing, advertising, finance, banking etc.
Around
100 resumes of People with Disability (PWD) and 8 leading employers from India
are registered under www.jobability.org so far.
